Bay Area Classical Harmonies (B.A.C.H.) is pleased to announce the program for its 2010 season, one of its most exciting ever!
The year will begin with the Bach Ensemble’s performances of G.F. Handel’s setting of the Brockes Passion, a phenomenal oratorio perfect for the Easter season. Rehearsals will begin March 13th, with performances the 27th and 28th (see schedule below). The orchestra will include period instruments, conducted by BACH founder Andrew J. Chung.
In April, at the height of the Paschal season, the Josquin Singers will perform a program of Paschal music from Eastern and Western Europe, including Byzantine, Gregorian and Slavic chants, as well as polyphony from Medieval and Renaissance Europe and from across Slavonic polyphonic repertoires. Rehearsals will begin April 11th, with performances the 22nd through the 25th, conducted by Artistic Director John Michael Boyer. This program will be repeated at the Berkeley Festival and Exhibition as part of the SFEMS Fringe series.
At the beginning of fall, the Josquin Singers will perform a fascinating program: Psalmody: The Psalter in East and West, exploring the liturgical use of the Biblical book of Psalms in chant and polyphonic traditions of Eastern and Western Europe. Rehearsals begin September 19th, with performances from the 30th through October 3rd, conducted by Artistic Director John Michael Boyer.
In October, Andrew J. Chung will be leading the B.A.C.H. Ensemble in a performance of W. A. Mozart’s Requiem, on the same program with a Beethoven Piano Concerto and Fantasy in C minor for Piano, Chorus, and Orchestra, a combination that is sure to please a wide range of listeners. Rehearsals will be each Tuesday in the months leading up to performances October 16th through the 23rd.
The Seemorgh Ensemble will once again offer its incredibly popular annual concert of Armenian choral works the weekend before Thanksgiving, November 20-21. This year’s repertoire includes excerpts from the most well-known Armenian opera: Anoosh by A. Tikranian, Sacrament of Vartanants cantata and, of course, fascinating sacred and secular choral works by Komitas. This program will be directed by the ensemble’s founder, Artin Der Minassians. Rehearsals will take place on Tuesdays in the months preceding the concert.
Finally this year, the Josquin Singers will present their annual Christmas program, Christ is Born: Christus Natus Est, incorporating the holiday’s repertoire from Eastern and Western Europe. Rehearsals begin November 29th, with performances December 9th through the 12th.
All singers are encouraged to audition for any and all programs. Our goal is to form an integrated and vibrant musical community. First auditions will take place in the East Bay on Tuesday, February 9th, 23rd, and Thursday March 4th all beginning at 7pm.
