July 30th, 2010 - FRIDAY

Last Friday Concert Series - July

The Bach Quartet Project - In Concert

Transcriptions of J.S. Bach's Organ works by David Cheng for String
Quartet.

String quartets by J.S. Bach? Join us Friday evening, July 30th, as we explore

the genius of Johann Sebastian Bach as you have never experienced before. We
will sample some of Bach’s masterworks originally composed for his favorite
instrument, the organ, now cleverly transcribed to take full advantage of a
String Quartet.

J.S. was considered the finest and most ingenious organist of his generation,
inspiring awe and fear among his contemporaries for his musical prowess. One
famous story recounts an upcoming organ competition in Dresden between J.S. Bach

and the French musician, Louis Marchand, which drew the attention of thousands.
Legend states that, the night before the competition, Marchand heard Bach
practicing on the organ, and was so impressed that, by morning, Marchand had
suddenly left town!

The program will include a wide variety of works, from the majestic Prelude &
Fugue in e minor BWV 533 (Cathedral), to the bold harmonies of the Fantasia &
Fugue in G minor BWV 542 (Great). Of course, this program is not complete
without the famous Toccata & Fugue in D minor BWV 565.

This concert is sure to win the heart of the most hard core Bach afficionado.

March 27th & 28th - BACH Ensemble

G.F. Handel's Brockes Passion

Bay Area Classical Harmonies (B.A.C.H.) presents the rarely performed Brockes Passion by G.F. Handel to celebrate the weekend of Palm Sunday.

Barthold Heinrich Brockes published a German oratorio libretto on the setting of the passion story. This work was one of the first passion oratorios, a free, poetic meditation on the passion story without the use of an evangelist character. Many baroque composers have written a passion oratorio based on this setting but the most famous setting is by G.F. Handel.

BACH founder/director Andrew J. Chung will lead a baroque BACH Ensemble with singers and musicians comprised of the Bay Area’s most talented up and coming musicians, along with professionals well known to local audiences.

The concert will be free for children 12.

The Bernal Hill Players is a trio of seasoned professional chamber musicians featuring Martha Rodríguez-Salazar on flute and voice, Leah di Tullio on clarinet, and Jennifer Peringer on piano.  They are joined for this concert by special guest Poppea Dorsam on cello.

The Bernal Hill Players believe in keeping music live, local, diverse, and friendly. Their next performing project, "San Francisco: In and About the City", features new works by local composers.

The Legacy of Komitas

Year 2009 commemorates the 140-year anniversary of the birth of Komitas (1869-1935), the founder of the Armenian classical music. Program features Komitas’ two unseen jewels, Lord’s Prayer and Vespers Hymn, along with An den Wassern zu Babel, the only music he composed in German.
