The Forgotten Tales of Armenia 
A Tribute to Komitas, the founder of Armenian Classical music

Throughout history, composers have been inspired by the musicians who brought their music to life. This month's program features music inspired by clarinetists. Anton Stadler was Mozart's inspiration for the Kegelstatt Trio. In the next generation of composers, Brahms created his Clarinet quintet in B minor for clarinetist Richard Muhlfeld. The results were some of the most beautiful music ever written for the Clarinet. Also on the program is Robert Schumann's Fantasiestucke that was originally written for clarinet and piano but is often played with viola instead. Don't miss some of the bay area's top classical musicians paying tribute to this magnificent instrument:

Bay Area Classical Harmonies celebrates J.S. Bach's belated birthday (it's actually the 21st), as well as our 10th anniversary season! Come drink a toast to our namesake at the exquisite Etiquette Lounge in San Francisco. This will be a chance for you and your friends to mix and mingle with the members and supporters of BACH in a relaxed, fun environment in one of the swankiest venues in the city - and in costume!  Everyone is encouraged to dress up - wear anything related to J.S. Bach, whether it be the time period (17th and 18th centuries), music, or whatever you like.

G.F. Handel's Messiah - December, 2007
Bay Area Classical Harmonies (BACH) is proud to present George Frideric Handel's masterpiece Messiah, performed by the BACH Ensemble. Conducted by BACH's Assistant Director and Associate Conductor John Michael Boyer, this will be the ensemble's first time presenting this work. The production provides a rare opportunity for listeners in the Bay Area to hear the work in its entirety, and not in the form of a sing-along. The soloists are some of the Bay Area’s top singers, all regular performers in professional music ensembles, including the BACH Chorus. Co-sponsored by Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in San Jose and St. John Armenian Apostolic Church in San Francisco the program will be performed December 1 through 8 at 4 different venues around the Bay Area: San Francisco, Berkeley, Kensington and San Jose.

Also known as the Sacred Oratorio, Messiah remains Handel's best known work. This piece was composed in London in 1741 and premiered in Dublin in 1742. Although it was originally conceived for Lent and Easter, since his death it is traditionally performed during the Christmas season.

Saint John Passion

Conducted by the Director Andrew J. Chung, one of the Bay Area’s youngest conductors to visit this piece for the second time; his conducting style has been described as “lively and heartfelt direction resonated through every section, from beginning to end.” Mr. Chung will also be playing the role of Jesus, metaphorically emphasizing the idea that Jesus Christ had a guiding role in the events leading up to his death, thus fulfilling his divine purpose as is shown in the Gospel of St. John. B.A.C.H. presents J.S. Bach's masterpiece, St. John Passion a second time, since its first performance in 2001 in Berkeley, Bakersfield and Long Beach. B.A.C.H. is a professional vocal and orchestral ensemble based in the Bay Area comprised of young professional musicians dedicated to the promotion of Classical music to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. The soloists are selected from the chorus, comprised of singers who regularly perform in professional music ensembles throughout the Bay Area. As it has moved from a student run group at UC Berkeley to a professional level group, B.A.C.H. revisits one of its most beloved pieces, performing in three locations in the Bay Area: San Francisco, Berkeley, and San Jose.

Johannes Passion is a musical composition by Johann Sebastian Bach that was first performed in 1724. The text for the body of the work is taken from The Gospel According to St. John chapters 18 and 19. Bach used Martin Luther's translation of the Bible with only slight modifications. The program will be performed Thursday, May 17th, at Trinity Episcopal Church in San Francisco; Friday, May 18th at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Berkeley and Saturday, May 19th in San Jose.

The Josquin Singers , a professional vocal ensemble based in the Bay Area, present “The Gates of Repentance: Lenten Music from the Byzantine and Slavic Traditions,” a free concert in cooperation with the St. John Koukouzelis Institute for Liturgical Arts and sponsored in part by the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco. Some of the most elegant and profound music ever created comes out of the Lenten period of the Eastern Orthodox tradition. This program will include Byzantine chants, including the famed “Great Troparion,” by the 9^th century composer Kassiane the Nun and excerpts from the “Great Canon” of St. Andrew of Crete (7th-8th centuries); and Slavic chants and polyphony, including selections of Dvestmenny polyphony and compositions by Peter Tchaikovsky.

The program will be performed Thursday, March 15th in San Francisco at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 3281 16th Street; Saturday, March 17th at Sacramento’s Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 600 Alhambra Blvd.; and Thursday, March 22 in Oakland at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Ascension, 4700 Lincoln Ave, as part of The Greek Cultural Celebration Week. Admission is free; suggested donation is $15.

Bay Area Classical Harmonies presents an Evening of Songs and New Music. This event is a part of concert series presented by Arlington Community Church. At this event on Friday, June 30th, some of the regular BACH artists Andrew J. Chung and Jamie Kuske will perform songs from Italy and Germany, Opera Arias by Mozart and Verdi, and Broadway Show Tunes along with new music composed by Brian Christian who will also accompany the singers. Claremont Country Club Men's Chorus, led by Andrew J. Chung, will be the guest group to open the concert. They will open the concert with singing " Some Enchanted Evening." Baritone Joseph Hammer, originally from California, sang with BACH for many years, returns and makes special appearance after completing his Master's degree in voice at New England Conservatory.

Music for the Dead
from Bach to Byzantine Chant
June 7-10th, 2006

Bay Area Classical Harmonies' Josquin Singers will bring to the Berkeley Festival and Exhibition Fringe "Memory Eternal: Music for the Dead from Bach to Byzantine Chant". The 12-member a capella choral ensemble will perform J.S. Bach's Jesu Meine Freude and select pieces from the Eastern Orthodox funeral service including compositions by St. John of Damascus (7th century) and Vasily Titov (Russian baroque era), in honor of the Saturday of Souls, and Eastern Orthodox holiday.  While Exhibiting the widely treasured choral music of J.S. Bach, Bay Area Classical Harmonies' program will expose the general classical music audience to Eastern Orthodox music, while giving the Eastern Orthodox community the opportunity to hear repertoire from its own musical heritage performed by a professional ensemble.  In honor of the Saturday of Souls, the Friday concert is free at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Ascension in Oakland.  A percentage of the proceeds of the Saturday concert will go towards the Annunciation Cathedral Building Fund.

On August 11th, the BACH Ensemble will perform one of Bach's most famous Cantatas, No.80, "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott," ("A mighty fortress is our God") along with Cantata No. 82, "Ich habe genug" ("I've had enough") at Saint Mary Magdalen Church in Berkeley. Cantata No. 82 Bass solo cantata, will feature our own Andrew J. Chung as the soloist, and Cantata No. 80 will feature soloists drawn from the BACH Chamber Chorus. Anticipating BACH's 10th Season, this will be a free concert with a suggested donation of $10. Please join us in the celebration.

BACH and Pro Arts Gallery are proud to present Enchanté String Quartet on August 31st @7:30PM at the Pro Arts Gallery.  Founded in 1992, Enchanté String Quartet is an experienced and versatile sting ensemble that has performed throughout Northern California. Their selections range from classical, waltzes, pops and broadway, to latin and jazz. Some of the selections featured in this program includes: Bachianas Brazileiras Number 5- by H. Villa-Lobos, arranged for string quartet by Matt Naughtin, Beethoven String Quartet Opus 18, Number 4 in C Minor, and String Quartet # 3 by Durwynne Hsieh (Bay area composer, written in 2003).
