Last Friday at Pro Arts
In 2006 a partnership was formed between the ProArts Gallery and Bay
Area Classical Harmonies (BACH). They each felt it was important to
cross artistic genres and expose their patrons to a unique experience
where several senses were engaged at a time. Thus, the Last Friday of
the Month Concert series was created. BACH, a non-profit organization,
has been dedicated to the presentation of fine classical music in the
greater San Francisco Bay Area and is now expanding into presenting
world music.

The Forgotten Tales of Armenia
A Tribute to Komitas, the founder of Armenian Classical music
During the turmoil of the turn of the 20th century, Komitas's music unified a nation that endured decades of tragedy and devastation. This month's concert features Komitas’ most revered Armenian folk melodies, including Gaaroon Aa, Shogher Djaan, Kaakaveek, Haabrbaan, Cheenaar Es and Keler-Tsoler, as well as others arranged by Sarkis Aslamazian for string quartet.
Sarkis Aslamazian’s arrangements boast a widespread reputation both in Armenia and beyond Armenian borders. His compositional proficiency and delicate musical taste shine in arrangements based on Komitas’s works originally composed for chorus and solo voice.

June 27th This FRDIAY! Chamber works for clarinet, piano and strings

Throughout
history, composers have been inspired by the musicians who brought
their music to life. This month's program features music inspired by
clarinetists. Anton Stadler was Mozart's inspiration for the Kegelstatt
Trio. In the next generation of composers, Brahms created his Clarinet
quintet in B minor for clarinetist Richard Muhlfeld. The results were
some of the most beautiful music ever written for the Clarinet. Also on
the program is Robert Schumann's Fantasiestucke that was originally
written for clarinet and piano but is often played with viola instead.
Don't miss some of the bay area's top classical musicians paying
tribute to this magnificent instrument:
Jen Adler, cello
Michael Okun, violin
Nansamba Ssensalo, viola
Hung-Chung Fang, violin
Ron Relic, viola
Jennifer Peringer, piano

LAST FRIDAY @ PRO ARTS - May 30
REBETIKO
In the early 1900’s Asia Minor Greeks were forced to
flee their homes and resettle in the larger cities of
Greece, bringing with them their traditional music. The
Kymata Trio follows in the footsteps of these
persecuted Asia Minor Greeks, particularly a
sub-culture called "Rebetes", through their music spanning
a period of roughly 50-60 years. The music of the
“Rebetes” now referred to as Rebetiko (Reh-beh-teek–oh),
has gone through a transformation, acquiring its
own peculiar character. The songs, often compared to
American blues, are full of grief, bitterness, passion and
romance, telling the stories of simple ordinary people.
